DiegoDiego was rescued on his last day at the shelter by Coastal German Shepherd Rescue. Shortly thereafter he devloped parvo, nearly unheard of in a mature dog. We believe he was susceptible due to the fact that he was never vaccinated and because of his neglected, underweight condition. Diego fought incredibly hard for his life and won. He was sick and clinging to life for a long time, we didn't know if he would make it or not. Diego beat the odds twice and is now one of our most inspiring stories!
Diego before Hospitalization
![]() Diego is the absolute perfect dog! Diego is dog friendly and is an all around gentle boy. He is just darling.
Diego was purchased from a breeder as a puppy and our guess is that someone paid good money for him (he is tattooed). This poor guy was immediately left in the backyard all alone and was used as a breeding machine. The tips of his ears are fly bitten and he was not given any exercise. The only thing that Diego received consistently from his previous family was food and water. And once they were done with him, he was thrown into the shelter.
Diego was saved by one of our volunteers on his last day. He rode perfectly in the car with out a peep. He is a little bit on the thin side and can stand to gain a good 10 pounds. Diego will weigh about 90 pounds.
Diego is in a foster home. His foster Mommy gave us a quick update about our little Angel. Diego was a little confused that he was allowed to be in the house. When he figured out that this is an ok thing, he sat back is now loving every bit it. He loves to go on walks with his foster family and he is just thrilled that he has a foster brother and sister to hang out with.

Diego was in Critical Care for 28 days! He was touch and go for a good 3 weeks. By the 2nd week in Critical Care they had to insert a tube down Diego's neck to feed him processed food as he had no appetite for anything. This poor boy has 2 tubes going into his body, one tube is for his food, the other is for fluids and antibiotics. He would be lifeless for 2 days and just about the time that we thought he has given up he comes back to life! This went on for 3 straight weeks, clearly Diego was trying to tell us that he really wants to live and that he is fighting the infection with every ounce of energy he had left in him.
The 2nd miracle happened, 3 days before Thanksgiving Diego turned the corner and was released to his foster home! He is doing tremendously well, eating like a little piglet and is as sweet and gentle as ever! He is fully recovered and is enjoying life like he has never enjoyed it before! Diego has his own warm bed, food, water, toys and 3 other furry brothers to keep him busy, not to mention Kevin the 5 year old boy that he gets to hang out with. What was the 1st Miracle? The most incredible people from CVS stepped up to the plate and told us early on that they will cap our medical bill at $6,000 and that they would take care of the rest of Diego's care and needs. At the end of the day, Diego's total vet bill came up to $15,500, a HUGE thank you from Diego and Coastal GSR for giving Diego a second chance at life!!! Diego is an absolute Angel, he has an incredible temperament, he is gentle, affectionate and very loving. Look into his eyes and you will see the kindness and the love that this dog can bring into your home. Diego is now happily healthy and adopted into an adoring family! We are still struggling to pay his $6,000 vet bill and keep rescuing dogs. Please consider making a donation today! Please make a secure online donation today to help us continue our efforts!
