Murphy's DeSkunk Shampoo Recipe
Hi All - I got this recipe for shampoo from a vet emergency room attendant one night after my Murphy got skunked and thought everyone might like to have it just in case you need it. It works really well! It only took one washing to get the skunk smell off. The smell was gone immediately.
  • 1 gallon water
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 tsp. liquid Dawn
  • Mix all ingredients and wash.

Evacuation Preparedness

  • Recent events have made it obvious that those of us who live in areas where natural disasters happen-wildfires, hurricanes, floods-need to be prepared to evacuate with our pets.
  • First and foremost-if it's suggested that you get out of an area and you have the time-GET OUT! If it's just yourself that you're responsible for you can make a different decision, but if you have animals in your care it will be easier to secure a safe place for them if you get out before the disaster hits.
  • Some suggestions to be prepared:
  • Have tags for every animal with phone numbers- such as cell phones, and perhaps the number of a relative who lives elsewhere.
  • Have enough leashes and collars in a designated place.
  • Enough food to last a few days that can be easily loaded into your vehicle.
  • Crates for smaller animals, and perhaps the collapsible crates for larger ones-these can be easily transported and will do in a pinch. Tie out lines and stakes.
  • Keep enough gas in your vehicle so that you can get somewhere safe at any time.
  • Make an evacuation kit: important papers, first aid supplies, necessary medications, CASH (smaller bills are better), pictures of pets for identification if they get separated. A change of clothing for family members, flashlights and batteries, a battery powered radio, toilet paper, some high energy snacks and bottled water.
  • Also, don't have more pets than you can safely transport. You do not want to have to make a difficult decision about which pets to save. And, if it comes down to it and you must leave without pets, do not confine them. They will have a better chance to survive if they can use their own instincts and abilities to get to safety.
