Alfie

For a long time, Alfie’s cries went unanswered, the neighbor not knowing what to do and the owner ignoring him. Finally, the cries of distress were too great to bear, and Alfie’s neighbor called Animal Control. When Animal Control arrived, the scene was more horrific than they could have imagined. A sweet, loving, 100 pound beautiful German Shepherd tied to a cable in the back yard, the cable attached to the pole. He had multiple wounds, all in different stages of the healing process, the most grotesque on the side of his face. It was as though the fur, the layers of skin and tissue had been removed down to the bone, leaving everything exposed to the elements.

The wound was made more grotesque by the infection that had already set in and the flies that were taking advantage of the moist area in which to lay their eggs. Adding insult to obvious injury, as though there were any chance of him going anywhere, the collar he wore around his neck was a shock collar, maybe to quiet his cries to the owner who obviously did not want to hear them. His owner is currently under investigation for cruelty and neglect.

Alfie has had his initial trip to the vet where the vet believes that his injuries are all a result of trauma, some bite and claw marks and possibly a weapon of some sort. He is being treated with antibiotics to control the infection observe the healing of the wounds. We have to wait until the infection is cleared to see if graphs will be required. The close up pictures of his wounds are quite graphic, so we have placed them in a photo album for viewing.

Meanwhile, Alfie is waiting for a foster home. He is thirsty for anything he can get, water, food, attention, everyday experiences. Despite the cruelty he has suffered from the one who was supposed to love him, he shows only love and sweetness to everyone he comes in contact with. Like many victims of abuse and neglect, he probably thought that obeying and showing love to his owner would end the pain, not knowing what he was doing to deserve what was happening to him. Now he will learn what it truly feels like to be loved.

Update 1/07/11
Many of you have read about Alfie. You know that Alfie suffered many injuries and faced many medical challenges. But throughout all the months since he arrived at Rescue, he has been full of love and affection. We are happy to report that he is living in a foster home but what he really, really wants is for a forever home. Hopefully before the new year of 2011 arrives! Here's his foster mom's report. "Alfie is doing GREAT!!! He loves having a home he can call his own. Cats do not bother him and he does fine with horses. He loves his long walks and loves even more to go out on a trail ride with the horses. If I leave without him, he will bark at me. He is always by my side and tends to be a bit clingy so we are working on that. He does get a bit impatient when it is time for walks or eating time but we are working on that as well. He loves to be with his people, but I have left him home alone for a day and he was fine. He also loves to be brushed. He will push the other dogs out of the way during brushing time, so he can get his turn."

All Alfie wants for the new year is for someone to love him and to care for him and to give him the hugs and kisses that he deserves.
