Anika

The first thing you notice about Anika from a distance and from her face is what an absolutely beautiful dog she is. The picture that is seared into your memory is her emaciated body and thoughts of what she must have gone through in order to get where she is today.

Anika is a two-year-old female black and tan German Shepherd. At the time she was picked up as a stray, she weighed 46 pounds. She could easily double her weight and still be a slender girl.

Anika easily captured the hearts of those at the shelter. The supervisor went on vacation and left strict instructions, along with the threat of life and limb, if anything were to happen to this girl. She wanted her to go to a rescue where her chances of meeting the right family were the greatest.

When I picked Anika up, she was in a kennel with three other dogs. You could see a tan tail on the cement floor surrounded by other dogs, but nothing else. Underneath the food container attached to the door, there was a head. When I called to her, she slowly got up from the floor, with what could only be described as one who had already given up. She had no idea who I was, what was going to happen to her, or where she would be going. She greeted me quietly and unassumingly with a slow and gentle lick to the face. She quickly got into her crate and realized it was lined with a down comforter. She put her head down as though she were sleeping on a pillow, and that is the way she stayed all the way home.

She is now safe, with instructions to give her as much food as she needs. She will never have to worry about being on the streets, looking for food, and being unable to find it again. The hip bones which now look like door knobs protruding from her back and the rib bones which you can count, will one day be covered with muscle, and she will stand tall and statuesque. Most important of all, she will be in a home, with a family who will love her forever, and that is all she is waiting for right now

We are asking a $500.00 donation for Anika's adoption.

If you are interested in meeting me, please contact Teresa via email at baltao@sbcglobal.net. Don't forget to fill out our online application.

The minimum adoption donation ranges from $300 to $500. This amount only partially covers the cost of veterinary care, boarding fees, and other miscellaneous expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs and is 100% tax deductible.

Prior to placement, all dogs will be spayed or neutered, receive current vaccinations, and are usually microchipped. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis. Special consideration may be given to those willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems.
