Bran is a handsome black and tan coated boy. The name means "raven" in Welsh, and in Welsh mythology, Bran the Blessed was a gigantic Celtic god and ruler of Britain. Bran was relinquished by his owner, an elderly woman who could no longer care for him. He had lived all his life with her, roaming the property with other dogs. Perhaps his outdoor life helps to explain all the brushing that needed to be done to clean his matted, shaggy coat when he arrived at Rescue. We should mention that he was very, very patient during his grooming session that lasted for over one hour. That's probably because he knows how handsome he is when he is fully groomed!
Life in the yard and roaming the property means that training in proper doggy etiquette was lacking in Bran's life. He'll need some training at walking nicely but he's a smart boy and will learn in no time at all that you decide the direction and destination of the walk, not Bran! He's very inquisitive about the world around him. He was very interested and pleased to meet some of the other dogs who arrived at Rescue on the same day, hanging out with two new girlfriends and following a new male doggy friend just as if he'd found a new brother.
Update 1/10/11
You've heard the expressions "swims like a fish" or "takes like a duck to water", right? Well, that's how we would describe Bran after his recent hydrotherapy swim session. He walked into the pool and started swimming. And kept on swimming. And swimming. Treats were nice (toys were sort of boring) but he'd also swim just for the fun of it. And if you could see how he responds to the sit command when you are outside with a doggie treat, your mouth would drop. He is stunning. Where's the camera?
Update 9/05/11
My name is Bran and I am sure you know about me. I was rescued a couple of years ago. Coastal found me a home, but my family brought me back because I wanted to be the boss in the home. I guess that sometimes exceptional smarts (which I have) are a challenge. For the past year and a half, I saw many of my friends at the kennel pack their belongings and leave. Several went to what they called a "foster home". I wondered what a foster home would be. I thought it was probably a very nice place because when I met my friends at adoption events, they always look like million dollar dogs! They would talk about warm baths and grooming, soft beds, long walks and delicious food, but what I really envy was the quality time spent with a dog lover! Well, this past week I finally got lucky! My favorite volunteer told me to pack my doggie duds and then she drove me to a FOSTER HOME! It is everything I imagined, only better! I am so thrilled! My foster mom is keeping me in my place. No doubt about it but she is the alpha dog! But I get plenty of long walks every day and I can play with toys and we get visitors and everybody tells me that I am gorgeous. I already knew that, but whenever I hear it, I pretend I am hearing it for the first time.
People say that dogs live in the moment. Well, right now I am a very happy camper.
Update 9/20/11
It's been a couple of weeks since Bran told you about going to a foster home so now it is time to hear from his foster mom. "Bran is good all by himself all day alone. He does not destroy anything or chew on things. Oh, he does want to do my laundry, I think, because every day when I get home, I see that he has brought my clothes from the night before from the clothes hamper two floors down. If he cannot find any clothes because I have hidden them from him, he will get the pillows or throws. I guess he likes to be close to them until I get home. When I get home, he is so happy that now he jumps up and gives me a kiss! That is so sweet. Once I am home, he will not leave my side for a while. No matter where I go, he will follow me. He'll even give up his food just to be with me. Bran is not a foodie so you can leave anything out and he will not touch it. That is just incredible for a dog, I think. Bran loves to play by himself and is very smart. He will catch a ball but he does not know to drop it so you can throw it again. He does not bother you at night and is patient until you wake up to take him for a walk". Finally, Bran prefers to be by himself rather than around other dogs. And as for kids, he prefers they not get in his space. And he really, really does not like kids on skateboard! He's fine with adults but he's still learning how to show his happiness.

The minimum adoption donation ranges from $400 to $500. This amount only partially covers the cost of veterinary care, boarding fees, and other miscellaneous expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs and is tax deductible.
Prior to placement, all dogs will be spayed or neutered, receive current vaccinations, and are usually microchipped. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis. Special consideration may be given to those willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems.
