Elvis

Elvis and Hawk, 2 Happy boys leaving the Shelter!

When you first meet Elvis, he pretends to be the strong, silent type. He is a very handsome, big boy, with a confident demeanor. But this is all for show.

What Elvis wants is an owner who will provide stability and a solid pack – including someone who is willing to be an alpha personality and take over a position of leadership. If you can take over this role for Elvis, he will show you who he really is under that strong exterior – a goofy, sweet boy who just wants to go on good long walks out in the big world, get body rubs and massages, and lounge with his family.

Elvis is an extremely smart dog. He learns the rules quickly when they are made clear to him – he sits on command, is obedient on a leash, and will wait patiently for his meal to be served. Once he trusts his family, he loves to get a good brushing and does not mind a nice, cool bath.

Elvis is housebroken, but he does appreciate a doggie door so that he doesn't have to hold it all day long. He doesn't mind sleeping in a crate, but he is also respectful of the house when he is out of it. He wouldn't think of tearing up your belongings – it might jeopardize his next round of belly-rubs. He is also more than happy to get in the car for a ride, as long as you can help the big lug get in.

Elvis is happy to meet new people, and would be good with kids as long as they were big enough that he could fall over on them to get his rubs. He is never shy about asking for a rubdown! He does get a little too excited about meeting cats, because he does have a little bit of that GSD chase in him. He mostly just wants to chase the motorcycles on the street, but the leash reminds him to walk at your pace. He is also protective, and may occasionally give a bark at another dog, but as soon as you let him know you have the situation under control, he is more than happy to go about his business.

Although he is a big love-bug, Elvis is also perfectly happy to relax on his own, and can be left alone while the family is at work without worry, as long as he knows he will get a walk for being such a good boy. He has no interest in digging or chewing, and while he will occasionally play with a nice squeak toy, his favorite game is catching bugs. He loves to stretch out on a patch of grass and take a long nap after a walk and a meal. He is so mellow and relaxed that often times, he literally melts, leaning into you until he falls on the ground to get some rubs. He just has the best heart, and is more than willing to completely hand it over to the right family.

Update 8/16/09
Splishing and splashing at the spa! What a wonderful way to spend a few hours. Just ask Elvis for whom this was a first time experience but he believed it when his friends told him that water therapy is just as good for dogs as it is for humans. During his day at the spa, Elvis was a little uncertain about what was happening but now that he's done it once, he knows he'll be more comfortable the next time. He'd also like to extend a sincere "thank you" to the life vest! Maybe he'll never take like a duck to water but once he relaxed and knew the water was a good thing, he did quite well.
