Forrest

Imagine that you and your lifetime canine friend lived outside for twenty four hours a day and that your home for those twenty-four hours was a six foot tall concrete 15' x 5' run in the backyard. Imagine that your shelter was only one igloo. Imagine that if it was boiling hot or freezing cold or if it rained, you and your friend had to take turns finding shelter in the one igloo. Imagine that you could never see green grass, flowers, squirrels, or any living thing because all you could see was the 6' tall concrete block. Imagine that the only time your human family acknowledged your existence was on those occasions when they remembered to give you a dish of food or a bowl of water. Imagine what it is like to try to keep the flies from your sensitive and tender ears but regardless of how often you shook your head, your ears became fly bitten. This is the only life Forrest has known for the three of four years of his life.

Fortunately, a girlfriend of one of the neighbors was visiting and heard a dog bark practically all night. The next morning, she looked over the fence and was horrified to see the dogs' living conditions. The neighbor had been aware of this mistreatment but had done nothing. The girlfriend, however, loved animals and saw two animals in need of saving. She marched to the house and told the owners that if they didn't relinquish the dogs, she would report them to the authorities. And that's how Forrest came to find a new home with Rescue. He must feel as if he has hit the jackpot. Food arrives twice a day and there is water, shade, and even playtime. And there are toys! How wonderful life is right now!

We at Rescue will never understand how people can do this to animals who depend on them for food and shelter as well as physical and psychological nourishment. We know that dogs need companionship, care, exercise, and attention. Further, German Shepherds are very people-oriented dogs and must spend time with their human families. Everything Forrest needed to thrive mentally and physically had been absent from his life. He is very sweet and are very appreciative of the love you give him. Can't you welcome him into your life?

Update from Forrest's foster Mom
I also wanted to tell you a little bit about Forrest. He's a sweet, sweet natured dog. He is wonderful with other dogs. I have two, Trixie is a female Siberian Husky and Gunner is a male German Shepherd. Forrest will be the submissive one if another dog is stronger in personality. He and Gunner play and rough house a lot during the day. They tumble all over the house and yard. Forrest attaches very quickly to the human pack leader (me). He will sit for me whether I have a treat or not. I put my hand on the floor and pat it and he knows to lie down.

There isn't an unkind bone in Forrest's body. His eyes are soulful, as if he's seen 100 lifetimes. He has never lived inside a home, so he was hesitant about where to go and what to do. He has quickly warmed up, and my dogs have helped him figure things out. He seems to know not to raise his leg or potty in the house. He has always followed my dogs out to go to the bathroom. The vet thinks he's no more than two years old.

He would make someone the most trusted, happy friend ever. He follows me everywhere I go, and he has learned that I'm not going to go away, so he seems content to stay put a lot more and follow me with his eyes. You couldn't ask for a more perfect situation with Forrest. He will adapt quickly. He loves having another dog around. He obeys simple commands. He's loyal, loving, tender, and gentle.

He does seem to like to carry my shoes off, but I always see him do it and get them back, so I don't know if he'd actually chew them up or not. It would be nice to see Forrest go to a home where someone was around during the day. This is a dog who has had enough lonely days to last a lifetime. He loves attention, pats, kisses, and hugs. He's an absolute pleasure and so easy to foster.
