Johnny

Johnny Boy is a handsome German Shepherd who loves the feel of wind blowing across his face. Whether running or riding in a car - a convertible would be especially nice but just having the windows open will work too - Johnny Boy loves to be on the move.

Brought to Rescue by a good Samaritan who found him as a stray, we are slowly getting to know him. We know that old standard ball game of fetch and retrieve might be a fun activity for him. When one of our volunteers tossed a ball in the air, he snapped to attention and pounced on the ball. Okay, maybe he didn't know what to do with it once he caught it, we know he'll be a big fan of playing catch once he gets the hang of it. And if you didn't guess it already, he loves to go for rides in a car. He's still not too certain about small dogs so as we get to know him better, we'll update this report.

Update 8/11/09
It was a great day at the park and at the beach today for Johnny who left the kennel behind when Art, Rescue volunteer extraordinaire, took him on a field trip. Riding shotgun, Johnny was on his way to hike through San Elijo trail. What a wonderful time for both Johnny and Art! Johnny really wanted to run so he'd bonk his head against Art's leg, urging him to start running. Finally settling into a nice, easy rhythm, Johnny had a great time, keeping up a steady pace and with a smile on his face! After a few rest stops in the shade under the trees and a mile and a half later, it was time for Johnny and Art to drive to their next destination. We should say that riding shotgun was fun on the way to the park but after all that exercise, it was now time for Johnny to take a short nap in the back seat!

Next stop was Solana Beach to check out the sand and the waves. This may have been Johnny's first time at the ocean because he was a little uncertain as to what to do. After all, it takes a while to realize that the waves are fun, not at all scary. It didn't take long for Johnny to realize that the beach was lots and lots of fun!

Johnny may not have had any formal training and perhaps no one has ever "taken the reigns" but he's a quick learner. If you correct him for doing something he shouldn't be doing, he looks up as if he were saying, "Oh, you don't want me to do that??? Ok, let's do something else!" Johnny will be a fantastic dog for some who is willing to put in some time to work with him. And he's definitely a "velcro dog", always happy to be by your side.

Johnny Boy would love to meet you and be invited to join you in your home. He's ready for lots of running, ball playing, and rides in your car!

Update 9/15/09
A month has passed and it was time to hit the streets again with Art. Johnny had such fond memories of the San Elijo Trail that he wanted Art to know that it should be his first stop on today's outing. Loved those hills, and Johnny is quite proud of the fact that they walked even further than they did last month. He's sure it was at least five miles! Next stop?? The Del Mar dog beach! This time he knew exactly what to do in the water, and he plunged right in. Art found a ball and that was great fun. Even a little Doxie who kept barking at him didn't phase Johnny as he bit the waves, pawed at the water and just plunged his entire head under the water. What a BLAST! Last stop was PetPeople for some treats and some loving. Then it was time for a nap on the drive back to the kennels. The day ended with a bath which wasn't all that much fun but Johnny was reminded that it was necessary to get the salt water from the ocean washed away. Once he understood, he knew that he'd just had the perfect end to a perfect day.
