Klaus

Okay ladies, Klaus is the guy that you have been waiting for. Not only is he tall, dark, and handsome, but he is also well-mannered, considerate, and housebroken…of course. Klaus is very eager to please and always happy to accommodate your needs. He wouldn’t dream of interrupting your beauty sleep. Klaus adapts his schedule to yours and waits patiently for you to wake up. Klaus is content to play with a tennis ball until you are ready to take him out.

Although Klaus came to us starved and underweight for his size, he has bulked up nicely in our care. Given his buff, tough-guy exterior, you might not expect to find behavior fit for a king. However, Klaus displays table manners that would even make Emily Post proud. He is always appreciative of little treats and shows his respect by taking them gently from your hand.

We don’t know what happened to Klaus in the past, but whatever it was made him cautious about entering into new relationships. Klaus doesn’t want to get his feelings hurt, so he is careful about making new acquaintances with people. He is a bit wary of people who make to much fuss over him. However; if you are patient, it won’t take more than a couple of minutes for him to warm up. Once you gain his trust, you can be secure in the knowledge that you have a loyal friend who will be by your side to comfort and protect you for life.

Klaus may not bring you flowers, but he won’t dig up your garden either. He will radiate happiness when you are at the end of his leash, and you will always feel safe in his presence. If you thought that all of the good guys were taken, you might want to reconsider. Klaus just might be the perfect gentleman….

Update June 14, 2009
Almost a year has passed since you last read about Klaus so it's time for an update. When you last read about him, you read that he is the guy for you and that contrary to some people's opinion, there are still a lot of good guys out there. Klaus, the perfect gentleman, is one of them!

When Klaus was picked up as a stray, no one knew that he'd most likely been a teacher in his past life. If you'd like to have a dog who could teach good manners and appropriate behavior to other dogs in your home, he's the dog for you. When other foster dogs come around who need to brush up on their behavior skills, Klaus shows them how to eat properly (although he has yet to teach anyone how to take a kibble from in between your teeth the way he does!), tells them when it is time to go to the park and what to do when they arrive at the park, tells them when it is time to go for a ride in the car, and then tells them when it is time to go to bed. He is very patient with his co-foster dogs, almost as if he is telling them, "I know where you're coming from but it's safe here with me. Just trust me." We know teachers have one of the most difficult jobs and Klaus will readily attest to that statement!

Klaus has also been an excellent student and has had extensive canine training. But as with all skills that are learned, lifelong continued training will be necessary for whoever adopts him. After all, continuing education is required of many human professions and dog obedience training isn't an exception!

Klaus is cautious about entering into new relationships. He has been fostered in two homes and it takes four or five days for him to know that you will not hurt him. Once he realizes that and feels safe, he will trust you with his life and will defend you with his last breath. Patience is the key.

Klaus is so handsome that everyone wants to come up to him and give him some lovin' and a big hug. But like many people, Klaus doesn't want just anyone in his personal space so you have to live with him before he will let you do that. One challenge with him is that he will take any treat from anyone, even a stranger. While he takes the treat gently, once you touch him - maybe on the chest or his neck or his tail - his immediate reaction is to yelp as though he is anticipating a hard hit with a hand. He then becomes very defensive and will give you a warning nip to protect himself. In a public setting, Klaus is great, so long as he isn't petted. (On a trip to a hotel lobby, full of people, he quickly was on a "down" with his human. And while hotel rooms aren't a destination for every dog, you should know that he didn't bark in the hotel room until room service arrived!) Just keep in mind that Klaus is a defensive dog, conditioned to protect himself from whatever two legged evil people did to him while he was growing up. You need to earn his trust.

Klaus is looking for a quiet adult home without a lot of people traffic. However, Klaus thinks it would be wonderful if his new home had another dog or two. Are you ready to be his loyal friend and protector? If so, you'll have a loyal friend who will be by your side to comfort and protect you for life.

We are asking a $500.00 adoption donation for Klaus.

If you are interested in meeting me, please contact Teresa via email at baltao@sbcglobal.net. Don't forget to fill out our online application.

The minimum adoption donation ranges from $400 to $500. This amount only partially covers the cost of veterinary care, boarding fees, and other miscellaneous expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs and is 100% tax deductible.

Prior to placement, all dogs will be spayed or neutered, receive current vaccinations, and are usually microchipped. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis. Special consideration may be given to those willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems.
