Leia and her brother Luke are an older pair of stunning Shepherd-Chow mixes whose sad story is all too common. Long neglected by their owners, animal control finally came upon them as strays. Refusing and unwilling to claim their dogs, these indifferent owners essentially abandoned them to their fate. They surely ignored the certainty that older dogs are often first to be euthanized. The shelter held out hope for this sweet pair, however, but for weeks they sat and wasted away. The odds turned when a kind volunteer reached out to Coastal, and Luke and Leia were brought into foster care. They came in hobbling and weak, straining even to stand up. Their coats were matted and filthy.

After a little TLC, what we found was a pair of striking beauties. They�re stronger, vigorous and active now, ready to live the life meant for them. Leia is the leader of the two, alert and curious. In her young and wild days she was probably a little bit of the �warrior princess,� so she would be best in a house without cats or other females. She�s very good on the leash. She has the purple tongue and upswept tail of a Chow, but her moving ears, loyalty and affection are all GSD. No Chow aloofness here! Outside she loves her walks, and inside she�ll find a nice place to lay beside you. Either way she loves to be with her people.

Sometimes people are hesitant about adopting older rescue dogs, thinking that they�ve �missed out� on the dogs� youth. In most every case, the entire lives of these dogs have been uninterrupted stories of loss, loneliness, callousness, and/or cruelty. Sadly, the only thing their past has given them is a yearning for happiness. In adopting an older dog, you�re starting them on a way of living they�ve never had before - you�re giving them the prime of their lives.

The minimum adoption donation ranges from $400 to $500. This amount only partially covers the cost of veterinary care, boarding fees, and other miscellaneous expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs and is 100% tax deductible.

Prior to placement, all dogs will be spayed or neutered, receive current vaccinations, and are usually microchipped. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis. Special consideration may be given to those willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems.
