Matrix

Enjoy the nature trail with Matrix!

They say the eyes are a window into the soul, and if Matrix could speak, he would tell you the story his eyes reveal. He would tell you he once had a loving family that he cherished and would lay down his life for, but in the end, that family left him alone in a cold, damp, place filled with other dogs waiting to die.

Most dogs who come into the rescue have a look of fear in their eyes. They don’t know where they’ve just come from, and they have no idea where they are going. Not Matrix. Matrix had a proud look, but a long stare, a stare that said, “I know they’re coming back for me. I’m looking for them in every person I see, around every corner I turn. They will be back, and I dare you to say they won’t.” It usually takes a rescue dogs a few days to accept where they are and leave the past behind, but Matrix is not one to give up easily. And he waited, and he waited, but they didn’t come. His days were now filled with new people, who, though strangers, treated him nicely, fed him, walked him, even gave him hugs and kisses, and kept telling him everything was going to be okay.

It has taken some time now, but the distant stare in Matrix’s eyes is disappearing. He now looks closely into the eyes of the volunteers who have spent so much time with him that they have warmed a lonely heart., and he looks even closer for that person who is going to take him home.

The volunteer who rescued Matrix saw in his eyes what the shelter was not willing to see, a dog who deserved a second chance at life with a family who would never leave him, and she gave him that chance. Now Coastal is going the distance and we will stand by him until his family is found, not the one that deserted him, the one that will love him forever.

Matrix is a very loving and loyal dog. He wants to have a family who wants only him, where he is the main four-legged center of attraction. He needs a family who has time to spend with him during the day . He doesn’t want to have to scale the walls or leap fences to find another family he thinks may have abandoned him. Yes, even with his weight and size, he can easily leap over a six-foot fence, never touching it. A warm bed at night would be nice, and food, but most of all, he wants a family who will stand by him, love him, give him strong leadership and guidance, all tempered with the love that will allow him to be just what he wants to be, your loyal companion, friend, and member of the family, to the end.

Matrix a big, strong. He is looking for a home where he can be the "King of his castle". Like all Royalty he wants to be the center of attention so he is looking for a an adult home without any other pets.

Today was Matrix's day for a LOOONG walk! A favorite destination of our Rescue dogs when they are invited by Art, one of our esteemed volunteers, to spend a day with him is the San Elijo Trail. Tried and tested, everyone always has a great time. Matrix thought he'd keep up his fast and somewhat frantic pace but then he met his first hill. Ooops. Time to slow down and keep pace with Art. It was a beautiful but warm day so both Art and Matrix were happy to find some shade and hunker down with some water and rest a while. After all, a 2.5 hour walk (Matrix assures us that was just one way and they had to walk back!) isn't for the faint of heart! And on that walk back, Matrix showed his affectionate side when he and Art stopped for another period of rest and Matrix proceeded to put his head on Art's lap and take a quick snooze. Dog slobber on your shorts is a reminder of how happy Matrix was to have a long walk and some time away from the kennels. Then another rest, some more water, and lots of "good" treats when they arrived at the car. Matrix was one tired and happy boy yesterday. Thank you, Art!

Update 10/25/09
We'd like to give you a short report on Matrix and his recent two week home visit. The good news is that we now know for certain that Matrix is a well balanced dog and a great and interesting guest. No separation anxiety. He loved to take long jogs with his humans and he really loved some playtime after lunch. He was also kept quite busy admiring himself in the mirror. How do we know??? Well, one day when one of the humans came home from work, Matrix met him at the bedroom door. (So much for the doggie crate. After all, they do get boring after a while and how can anyone resist exploring new places in a new house?) Everything in the room was fine except there were doggie nose prints everywhere on the bedroom mirror! We can just imagine Matrix's gazing at his handsome face and crooning, "I'm too sexy for my fur!" or words to that effect. Matrix still thinks it is okay to surf the kitchen counters - isn't that where all the good stuff is kept??? - so he'll still need some training in good canine manners. Bottom line? Matrix would love to be invited to your home as a guest. Won't you invite him?
