Sarge

Sarge was a POW (that is Pup On Waiting-list in our world) at an indoor shelter for five, long months. We aren’t sure what his three-four year tour of duty consisted of before he was captured as a stray, but he must have sustained some heavy fire because half of his left ear is MIA. It appears to be some kind of tear, but this old, battle wound has long since healed and only serves to make him more endearing. The people at the shelter were so taken by Sarge’s spirit that they went out of their way to keep Sarge off of death row until we were able to give him leave.

At the shelter where Sarge was doing time, the dogs are kept three or four at a time to incredibly small quarters. Consequently, Sarge hadn’t had a breath of fresh air in quite a long time. The warmth of the sun must have been a real shock to his system because he started shaking when we exited the shelter, however; it didn’t take Sarge long to realize that we were the good guys and Sarge was born again. He engaged Kelty, a seven month old Anatolian Shepherd in play, and then ran circles around Pippin, a four month old puppy. Sarge certainly wasn’t the same melancholy mutt in the shelter’s intake picture any more. He knew that he was one of the few, one of the proud…a GSD!

Update from Sarge's foster Mom:
With his one ear curled down from a long-ago injury, Sarge is like a grizzled but lovable Army sergeant. He is a mellow, easy-going, very affectionate boy who loves nuzzling his foster mom's hands and trying to crawl into her lap. Sarge plays well with Lola, his foster parents' smaller gshep mix, and Sarge does not mind when Lola eats the leftovers from his food bowl. They wrestle, tussle, and tumble around the house and yard. But much of the time Sarge is happy to just hang out quietly wherever his foster parents are.

He has fairly good leash manners and is working on staying patiently in a "sit" before going out the gate and to walk better in heel. When encountering male and female dogs, children, and joggers he is quite calm and gentle. Squirrels, however, are another story and you will need to be careful of his prey drive. His foster mom saw him once up-close to a cat and he seemed a bit too interested, but not aggressive. Sarge will do fine in a home with either a playful female or male dog. He will also probably be fine with children, but more information is needed to see how he interacts with smaller kids.

We are asking a $400.00 donation for Sarge's adoption.

If you are interested in meeting me, please contact Teresa via email at baltao@sbcglobal.net. Don't forget to fill out our online application.

The minimum adoption donation ranges from $300 to $500. This amount only partially covers the cost of veterinary care, boarding fees, and other miscellaneous expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs and is 100% tax deductible.

Prior to placement, all dogs will be spayed or neutered, receive current vaccinations, and are usually microchipped. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis. Special consideration may be given to those willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems.
