Sterling
A call went out to volunteers, could someone please travel to pick up this dog. Many answered the call, one traveled 180 miles roundtrip to ensure Sterling was safe. By 7:00 p.m. the next evening, Sterling was tucked away nicely in a boarding facility.
We saw Sterling for the first time Saturday morning. We brought him out for a walk. He went between the volunteer's legs and would not come out. He was shaking so badly that it was visible. His tail was tucked so snuggly between his legs that you couldn't even tell he had one. He just stood there and let you pet him, hug him, whatever you wanted to do. You could tell he was in shock and had no idea what was going on or where he was. He was brought out to a field where we walk the dogs, and there he ran and showed life for the first time. Yes, there is still some spirit left in Sterling.
Sterling is not out of the woods yet. No, he is not in danger of being euthanized, but he is suffering from kennel cough and needs a lot of TLC to get him back into shape. He is so thin right now that you can see his ribs. As soon as he is healthy enough he will get a much needed bath. You see, one of the sad things with Sterling, when he came here, he smelled as though he had spent the entire time in the shelter lying in his own urine. He looked as though he hadn't eaten in weeks. Not only were they not willing to give Sterling another day and the chance at life, but they weren't even going to allow him to die with dignity. He would have been euthanized in this condition.
Sterling has a second chance now, and we are determined to find someone who will give him the life of love and dignity which he deserves.
Update as of 2/28/08
When he got back to boarding, he got a well needed bath. As noted above, his condition was very bad, but due to his health, we did not want to risk even a bath until he was out of the woods. The groomer noticed something on his hip that she thought at first was a tick burrowed into a hole . . . hmmmmm no tick here. A BB gun bullet was lodged in his hip and had to be removed . . . . this poor boy was used as a target, thankfully he escaped the terrible inhumane situation he was in by running, and thankfully he did not have a collar or chip either. Who knows what else was done to Sterling?
Everything makes sense now, all Sterling wants to do when he meets you is either be carried, hide in between your legs or hide in the bushes, now we know why.
All this boy wants in life is to be loved and not abused, will you be the one that will give him the love he has been longing for? Will you be the home that he can feel safe in?
We are asking a $400.00 adoption donation for Sterling.
