Zander

Zander's life changed abruptly one day. The pugs moved in, and his owner decided it was time for Zander to move out. It was the best thing for Zander. He is trading in his back yard life for a bath and a home with a warm bed where he can be a part of the "inside" family and not have to watch from a distance. All of Zander’s life he was cooped up in the backyard with his own “dog igloo” that his owners were proud to mention.

Zander is what is known as a King Shepherd. A King Shepherd resembles a large German Shepherd Dog. The breed was originally developed on the East Coast using American bred German Shepherds, crossed to flock guardians, which were then crossed with European bred German Shepherd dogs.

Zander attended his first adoption event and was very well behaved. He got lots of attention and had lots of company to relax in the grass with him, a place he seemed very content to be. When the volunteer stopped petting his head, Zander would politely nudge underneath his hand to get him to resume this affection. He has never seen so many different other dogs, people, toys at Petsmart and these enormous things that move so fast (cars). Zander’s first car ride was when he was 8 weeks old, he has never ridden in a car nor seen one since until one of Coastal’s volunteers picked him up from his “Dog House” in the backyard.

By 2:00 in the afternoon, all Zander wanted to do is lay down and sleep, he was exhausted from taking in this new world that he is now part of.

Update on Zander:
Zander loves attention but isn't pushy about asking for it. He'll raise a paw to ask for more, but that's it--no face licking or arm pushing. He's a perfect gentleman with small children. He sits patiently as they pet him, and he doesn't even react if they pull on his tail.

He may be a big guy, but he's completely aware of his size and surroundings. He did great with the other dogs at the adoption event as well as the mix he found while we strolled around Petsmart.

He listens extremely well, and goes where you ask him to. He's a dog owner's dream and would be great for a new Shepherd owner who wants to lose a few pounds by going on walks with this guy.

We are asking a $400.00 donation for Zander's adoption.

If you are interested in meeting Zander, please contact Teresa via email at baltao@sbcglobal.net. Don't forget to fill out our online application.

The minimum adoption donation ranges from $300 to $500. This amount only partially covers the cost of veterinary care, boarding fees, and other miscellaneous expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs and is 100% tax deductible.

Prior to placement, all dogs will be spayed or neutered, receive current vaccinations, and are usually microchipped. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis. Special consideration may be given to those willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems.
